CUHK(SZ) Invites Applications through the National Thousand

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen [CUHK(SZ)] is a new, independent university established in March 2014. Founded through a Memorandum of Understanding between The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Shenzhen University and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, the new University is a research-orientated, forward-thinking, non-profit making University, which places emphasis on cross-disciplinary teaching and research. The establishment of CUHK(SZ) is an initiative to help nurture future generations of university graduates who are international in outlook, learned in the disciplines they follow, upright in their character, and committed to serving the needs of society.

CUHK(SZ) will draw upon CUHK’s traditions of academic excellence and no effort will be spared to ensure that the teaching quality at CUHK(SZ) is on a par with that of the CUHK, so that it will become a preferred research university located in Shenzhen, firmly rooted in China, and endowed with a global vision. Students will be provided with an education experience distinguished by a flexible credit unit system, a college system, whole person general education, bilingualism as well as multiculturalism. With the mission of advancing creation, preservation, application and dissemination of knowledge through the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and public service; and the vision of establishing as a first-class research university regionally, nationally and internationally, CUHK(SZ) will provide world-class educational opportunities to students in the PRD Region and nurture talents for Shenzhen, the PRD Region and China as a whole.

There are three schools in CUHK(SZ), namely the School of Management and Economics, the School of Science and Engineering, and the School of Humanities and Social Science. The Senate of CUHK is responsible for the assessment and approval of the academic programmes. CUHK(SZ) currently has eight undergraduate programmes and five postgraduate programmes. The undergraduate programme category includes Marketing and Communication, Global Business Studies, Finance, etc. in the School of Management and Economics, and various programmes in Science and Engineering, and Humanities and Social Science, such as New Energy Science and Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering, Statistics as well as other innovative and inter-disciplinary subjects. Three undergraduate subjects (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Professional Accountancy and Translation) were added into the Undergrad-Progamme Category in fall 2016. Financial Engineering, Translation & Interpreting Studies and other 3 Postgrad-programmes have been successively introduced during 2014-2015 while the programme plan for the Ph.D. has also been completed. The simultaneous recruitment for undergraduate, postgraduate and research Ph.D. students commenced in July 2016.

Located in a picturesque site to the south of the Universiade Park in Longgang District, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, the campus of CUHK(SZ) occupies an area of around 100 hectares (1 million square metres) with a buildable area of around 500,000 square metres. The green pastures, the rolling hills and the serene lake offer stunning views and a quiet learning environment. The initial phase (55,000 square metres) of campus construction was completed in March of 2014, whilst the phase 1 (300,000 square metres) construction is expected to be completed in 2017.

1. Hiring Needs

We wish to recruit top talents worldwide in the following disciplines: 1) Finance; 2) Economics; 3) Mathematics and Applied Mathematics; 4) Statistics and Data Science; 5) Physics; 6) Chemistry; 7) Information Science and Engineering; 8) Computer System and Engineering; 9) Electronic Engineering; 10) Control Engineering and Robotics; 11) Ocean Engineering; 12) Energy Science and Engineering; 13) Biomedical Science and Engineering; 14) Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing; and etc.

Applications from top talents with interdisciplinary research experience in cutting edge fields are highly expected.

2. Position Specifications

The top talents are to be hired under all major National 1000 Plan Recruitment Programmes. The specifications and qualifications are detailed as below:

Programme 1: National 1000 Plan - Long Term (full time positions)

Applicants should (1) have obtained a doctorate degree from a world renowned foreign university; (2) be under 55 years of age in principle; (3) be an expert or a scholar holding a full professor position or the equivalent in a reputable foreign university or a R&D institute; (4) be able to work full time at CUHK(SZ).

Programme 2: National 1000 Plan- Short Term (part time positions)

Applicants should (1) have obtained a doctorate degree from a world renowned foreign university; (2) be under 55 years of age, in principle; (3) be an expert or a scholar holding a full professor position or the equivalent in a prestigious foreign university or a R&D institute; (4) be approved by their employers to work outside their work during off-time and be able to work for CUHK (SZ) at least 2 months each year for 3 years in session.

Programme 3: National 1000 Plan’s Recruitment Programme of Foreign Experts (RPFE) (full time positions)

Applicants should (1) be non-ethnic Chinese experts; (2) be an expert or a scholar holding a full professor position or the equivalent in a prestigious foreign university or a R&D institute; and/or be a senior technical or managerial professional in an internationally reputable company or a financial institution; (3) be engaged in research in natural science, engineering and technology, economics and management fields; have conducted world-class research; within the past five years, have published important academic articles in core journals of their fields, or have been awarded with distinguished technology awards, or be in good mastery of important research skills and key science and engineering technologies; (4) be under 65 years of age; (5) be able to work full time at CUHK (SZ).?

Programme 4: National 1000 Plan’s Programme for Young Talents (full time positions)

Applicants should (1) be under 40 years of age; (2) have obtained a doctorate degree from a world renowned university, and have no less than three years overseas scientific research experience. Exceptions will be given to the applicants who are about to obtain the doctoral degree, or have obtained the doctoral degree only recently, but have made extraordinary research achievement during his/her doctoral training period. (3) Be able to serve at a long term full time position for CUHK (SZ).

3. Salary, Fringe Benefits and Work Conditions

CUHK (SZ) will provide each scholar hired through the 1000 plan programmes with a competitive salary package commensurate to his/her experience and comparable to the corresponding teaching staff salary levels in CUHK. CUHK (SZ) will contribute to the successful applicant’s social security programme including pension, health insurance as well as insurance for work related injuries in accordance with the prevailing labor laws applicable in mainland China.

Shenzhen Longgang District Government will help arrange the children of each successful applicant to be admitted in high quality public preschools, primary schools, secondary schools or high schools in Longgang District. The Shenzhen Longgang District Government will provide each successful applicant a rent-free apartment (about 120 square metres in size) for up to 10 years. CUHK (SZ) will provide successful applications with spacious offices, well-equipped laboratories, and sufficient research start-up fund According to the nature of research and actual need. The University will provide full support for the successful applications to build up their research groups and nominate them for various provincial/municipal talent programmes such as Guangdong Provincial Innovation Teams and Leading Talents Plan, Shenzhen Municipal Peacock Plan and etc.

Additional subsidies, research funds and awards will be granted to the successful applicants of the National 1000 Talent Programmes by Guangdong and Shenzhen governments as detailed below:??

1) A successful applicant hired under Programme 1: National 1000 Plan-Long Termand Programme 3: RPFE shall be provided with the followings: (1) A lump-sum living subsidy of 1 million RMB granted by the Central Government; (2) A lump-sum scientific research fund of 1 million RMB and a housing subsidy of 0.5 million granted by the Guangdong Provincial Government; (3) A monetary award of 3 million RMB granted by the Shenzhen Municipal Government (refer to the Shenzhen “Peacock Plan A”); (4) A subsidy of 1.5 million RMB granted by the Shenzhen Longgang District Government.

2) The applicant hired under Programme 2: National 1000 Plan-Short Term shall be provided with the following: (1) A lump-sum living subsidy of 0.5 million RMB granted by the Central Government; (2) A lump-sum scientific research fund of 0.5 million RMB and a monetary award of 0.25 million from the Guangdong Provincial Government; (3) A monetary award of 2.0 million RMB from the Shenzhen Municipal Government (refer to the Shenzhen “Peacock Plan B”); (4) A subsidy of 1.0 million RMB granted by the Shenzhen Longgang District Government.

3) The applicants hired under Programme 4: National 1000 Plan’s Programme for Young Talents shall be provided with the following: (1) A lump-sum living subsidy of 0.5 million RMB granted by the Central Government and a research fund of RMB 1 to 3 million issued phase by phase within 3 years; (2) A lump-sum scientific research fund of 0.5 million RMB and a monetary award of 0.25 million granted by the Guangdong Provincial Government; (3) A monetary award of 2 million RMB granted by the Shenzhen Municipal Government (refer to the Shenzhen “Peacock Plan B”); (4) A subsidy of 1 million RMB granted by the Shenzhen Longgang District Government.??
